in the lead by four points but a fox news poll conducted last week has mitt romney ahead by two. keep in mind both leads are within the margins of error. in the past three elections voters here in virginia have picked the winning candidate so it's clear the road to 1600 pennsylvania avenue may run straight through the state of virginia. it wasn't all that long ago that virginia was better known for its civil war battlegrounds than its political ones. for ten straight presidential elections the republican candidate came out on top, but then in 2008, virginia voters went for barack obama. >> virginia! >>t was interesting because he kind of road tde the wave and h swayed a lot of districts that had been traditionally republican. >> while the 2008 vote here closely mirrored the rest of the country, virginia has actually fared better economically. its unemployment rate is below the national average from its fast growing washington, d.c., suburbs to the huge military presence around norfolk, a lot of government tax dollars flow into the state. but, like a loet of the nation, virginia has experience

morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, savannah. mitt romney actually resumes a full campaign schedule today in florida, but president obama will focus for one more day fully on sandy recovery efforts. he'll get that firsthand look of the jersey shore and the damage there later today. election day may be six days away, but the president appears to believe the best politics, stay off the campaign trail. today it's storm-ravaged new jersey. tuesday red cross headquarters. >> my message to the federal government. no bureaucracy, no red tape, get resources where they are needed as fast as possible. >> reporter: mitt romney also suspended campaigning tuesday but still traveled to the battleground state of ohio to encourage donations to the red cross. >> i appreciate the fact that people right here in dayton got up this morning, some went to the grocery store i see and purchased some things that these families will need. >> reporter: governor romney is back campaigning today holding three rallies across florida. but the president remains in disaster response mode. he'll survey storm damage w
to that the backdrop, of course, a presidential election just eight days away. president obama, governor romney forced to cancel some events and reschedule others. we just got word that the president has cancelled a planned event in florida this morning in order to get back to washington. they were worried air force one may not be able to land in deteriorating conditions. >> we've got correspondents all up and down the east coast. let's start with al roker in point pleasant beach, new jersey. al, what can you tell us? >> reporter: well, i can tell you, matt, that these dunes that i'm on were built for a storm in 1992 that had washed into the town and caused massive damage. these dunes are in damage of breaching. high tide is starting to come up over the dunes. this is a massive storm, as you mentioned, and it will get more intense. it's now over the gulf stream that's running parallel to the east coast. that is extremely warm water. we've seen pressure drops. the pressure is now down to 941 millibars, and it may strengthen even more. we expect more strengthening. take a look at a path of, first of all
and has just now cancelled an event for tomorrow scheduled for green bay, wisconsin and governor romney has also cancelled some of his events. we'll have more on the impact on the presidential race. >> we have correspondents stationed all up and down the east coast. let's start with al roker. >> reporter: if you look back at this beech there's usually on a beautiful sunny day from these dunes out to the water's edge about 150 feet as you can see. that is gone. and it is enencroacroaching on dunes. sandy is threatening these dunes and the winds are picking up. sandy has 85 mile-per-hour winds. it is moving north-northwest at 20 miles per hour. so it's picked up forward speed. and at this at any rate it will be reaching the new jersey shore line sometime within the early evening hours to mid to late evening hours here along the shore line. once that happens as you can see on the path all bets off. this is a massive storm. over 800 miles wide. doesn't matter where it hits. but, the northeast quadrant of the storm is the worst part and that's where it will cause problems for new york, coast
